Lesson 6 Practice Session B

At the time we wrote this project, it was our intention to have it available on a CD-Rom. Therefore, all the instructions in practice session 6B call on the student to find certain files on the CD. Obviously, there's no CD involved at this time. Feel free to read the practice session. You may pick up some information.

I've set up a number of files for you to play with.

First, create a place to put these files.

In Windows Explorer, highlight the name of your "C" drive.

Then go to File and click on New and click on Folder. At the very end of the list of Files on the right hand side of the Windows Explorer screen you will find "New Folder". Type a name for the new folder in the space next to the folder icon. Let's name it something like "Target". When you have typed in the word "Target" (without the quotes), press the Enter key twice. Then press F5 to refresh your window. You'll see the folder named Target in the list of folders you have in Drive C. That will be your "target" folder.

Now find the files I want you to practice with:

Go to your CD-Rom Drive. I mean, look on the left side of the Windows Explorer screen and find this icon:

The letter to the right of the icon is the name of your CD-drive. Mine is "G". Remember?

Double-click on the icon and a list of all the files that are on this CD will appear on the right hand side of the Windows Explorer screen.

(You may need to make this window smaller so that you can see the Windows Explorer window easier.)

Inside the folder named "How-To..." you will find a folder which I've named "Practice"?

Highlight the folder by clicking on it once with your left mouse button. Go to the Edit menu and select Copy.

Now go back to the folder you created named Target and highlight it. Go to the Edit Menu and select Paste. That's it....the files I created are now on your hard drive in a folder you created!

Double-click on the folder named Target and you will see the folder Practice on the right side of your Windows Explorer screen.

Now refresh your window by pressing F5. See that your folder Target has a + sign in front of it....because it has another folder inside of it named Practice.

Click on the plus sign and then click on the folder Practice and the files inside that folder will be displayed on the right side of your Windows Explorer screen.

You can double-click on a file to open it or you can single-click on the name of a file to select it and then you can move it or copy it or delete it.....whatever you want.

In order to try all of the above, follow these steps:

  1. Double click on the file named Shadow.
Enjoy the poem, then close the file by pressing the X button (the far right one) at the top of the window.

Highlight the folder Target and create another folder named Lesson6.

    1. Find the file Shadow and highlight it.
    2. Go to the Edit option on your menu bar and select Copy.
    3. Go to your target folder "Lesson6" and highlight it
    4. Go to the Edit option of your menu bar and select Paste.

  2. Double click on the folder named "fileZ.html" Enjoy it. Now close the file and delete it.

  3. Let's see, you've copied folders from one drive to another, you've moved within a drive, and you've deleted a file....is there anything else?

OH, yes.....to select adjacent items from a list, hold down SHIFT while you select items. .For non-adjacent items, hold down CTRL and click items you want to select.

Try it. If you wanted to select file A and file C, you would highlight File A and then hold down the CTRL key while you highlight File C. Then you can move both of them at the same time.

If you want to move files A,B, and C (but not D), highlight file A and then holding down the Shift key, highlight file C. Now you can move all three together.

If you try to move any of the files listed on the right hand side of the screen into the folder Target, you'll get the message that a file of that name already exists...do you want to replace it? That's why I had you create another folder named Lesson6 to move files into.

I think that's enough for now. Agreed?

Just for the heck of it, here are links to the files I wanted you to find and manipulate.
