Dear Computer User:
Welcome to Personalize Your Computer!
Your life will never be the same!
This disk is for the novice user. One has to begin somewhere and we are beginning with the assumption that you are new to computers and/or just a bit afraid that you might really mess things up if you try to change anything.
There's nothing like information and experience to ease those fears and the more confidence you have in yourself and your computer, the more you'll use and enjoy it. Also, there's nothing like personalizing something to make it your own. People paint walls and hang pictures at home and buy new hubcaps and seat covers for their cars and discover that these simple acts give them a real feeling of ownership. It's the same with your computer. By changing just a few things you can make your computer reflect YOU.
This file is about the things you SEE on your computer. When you turn your computer on, you may see a variety of bars, icons, buttons, your desktop and wallpaper. (If you don't know what those things are, don't worry.....we'll explain as we go along.)
There are a number of these things that you can change or personalize with what you have on your computer.
Yes, they are already there and you might as well use them. They won't cost you anything!
I have Windows 98® on my computer so the pictures included here show what you see with Windows 98 running. For those of you using Windows 95®, the screens will look slightly different. You get to the features the same way and change things the same way. You don't have quite as many options or the same options but the differences will not prevent you from doing everything that is covered here.
There's a lot of information on this CD and you can read it in several ways. You can just sit back and read.....but when you start changing things on your computer, will you remember what you have read? You didn't learn to write your name or tie your shoelaces without a lot of practice. This is a hands-on exercise!
In order to get the most from this CD you will need to be able to view your own desktop (what you see when you turn your computer on) as well as the instructions included here.
So, your first lesson will be how to reduce the size of your screen.
If you are brand new to computers and don't know how to minimize a screen or just what to do when you read "Click here", please read How to... first. It covers the basic skills you need to use a computer and will need in this exercise.
(If you got here from the Main Menu and wish to return there, click on the BACK arrow on the top left hand side of your screen.)
Please click here for a preview of the basics of Personalizing Your Computer.
Or you may click here to return to the Main Menu.
Good Luck and Have fun!
*Windows* refers to Microsoft Windows 95® or
Microsoft Windows 98®.
